He formerly wrote for The Economist, Al Monitor, and Al Jazeera English, among others. He has reported across Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Turkey and Greece. He previously consulted with several leading political risk and advisory firms in Washington, DC and London. In his forthcoming book, The New Byzantines: The Rise of Greece and Return of the Near East, published by Hurst, Mathews travels across the region offering a bold reappraisal of Greece's place in the wider Middle East and exploration of its rising geopolitical importance in a multipolar world.
