Ioannis Stefanou is Partner & Head of Energy & Resources Sector of Grant Thornton Greece and brings more than 17 years of international experience in business, strategy and engineering. He holds an integrated Diploma in Electrical and Computer Engineering (BSc plus MSc in Power Systems) and a 2-year MSc in Sustainable Energy Technologies from Delft University of Technology, with focus on energy economics and novel technologies.
During his professional career he has gained a profound understanding of the design and operations of wholesale and retail electricity and gas markets, regulation of transmission and distribution networks, as well as policies on energy transition. Ioannis has implemented numerous projects related to the development of policy and regulatory frameworks, energy market reforms and liberalization, development of niche business strategies and models for large corporate clients. He focuses on the deployment and commercial uptake for energy transition projects, concepts and models such as international interconnectors, battery storage (BESS), Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs), electromobility, Demand Side Response (DSR), renewable hydrogen and offshore wind.
In the context of his assignments, he has supported several electricity and gas utilities in Greece and Europe. He has also offered advisory services to institutional clients including Ministries, Energy Regulators, Transmission and Distribution System Operators and Energy Exchanges. Last but not least, Ioannis has also worked for reputable European Institutions like the European Commission (DG ENER, DG CLIMA), ACER, World Bank (WB) and International Finance Corporation (IFC), the European Investment Bank (EIB) and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD).
Finally, he has been one of the leading experts on the preparation of the Greek Recovery and Resilience Plan, responsible for the Green Transition Pillar, including investments of ~12 billion EUR and heavily involved in its implementation.
In 2023 he received the global Emerging Leader award among the Grant Thornton network with more than 73.000 employees.
